Length of Training: Computer Service Technician - 7 weeks Telecommunications Installer - 7 weeks Wireless Networking - 4 weeks Telecommunications Technician - 7 weeks Basic Electronic Theory - concurrently 6 weeks with first two Competency based education - Total 18-25 weeks
Days/Time: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Students must maintain a 90% attendance level.
Entry Requirements: JobTrain Orientation and WONDERLIC Assessment mathematics and reading 8th grade level. Installer positions require climbing poles and ladders with 50 to 70 pounds of equipment. Technician positions have less physically demanding requirements.
SKILLS TO BE ATTAINED:
Computer Service Technician – Install motherboards, memory, CPUs, hard drives, floppy drives, CD and DVD drives. Format drives. Install operating systemS, load and remove software, upgrade OS and software programs. Troubleshoot and repair common computer problems.
Telecommunications Installer – Terminate CAT 5e and 6 cables with RJ 45 plugs and jacks, fiber optic cable with connectors and splices, and do punch downs and cross-connect coaxial cables with connectors. Test cables with LinkRunner or Fluke DSP cable analyzer, fiber optic power meter as appropriate. Assemble simple LANS with copper cables, fiber optic cables and wireless. Setup a closed circuit TV.
Wireless Networking: Learn to set up a network in a home or business that uses wireless components -- using NIC cards and wireless routers with desktop computers or laptops. Learn the security precautions and how to install and configure wireless access points. Learn to help home users set up their computers to access public wireless networks.
Telecommunications Technician: Use oscilloscope and digital multimeter to measure signals, describe and demonstrate modulation methods of a signal, harmonics, distortion, and demodulation circuits. Describe and demonstrate land-line telephony and cell phone telephony.
